Mix of Fish

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Tidal Potomac
Location: DC/MD Line

Hooked up with many Blue Cat Monsters, over 20 lbs. Switched to some LM/SM and sure enough, caught one after another, not as big as in late March and early April. And Buffalo fish sure love salted tubes and curly tails. 'Til next time, tight lines!

DNR Note* We believe Mr Chung is catching quillback, not buffalo's.

Additional Dialogue between Mr Chung and MD DNR that we felt would be useful:

DNR: Hello Han, someone was questioning us as to where youre fishing, are you in the Montgomery Co portion of the river, right on the line, in DC waters or below DC? Thanks for the reports.

Han: It's above chain bridge and below little falls dam. Smallmouth and largemouth are everywhere in little deep pockets, you just gotta know what to use and have patience on some snags. Walleyes are still around. Hickory shad is too easy, but fun; shad darts about 40 ft out and 5 ft. under. American shad are a little deeper. Large crappies on beetle spin, but I need some pullage. Ive seen snakeheads everywhere. Didn't realize their population and size have come this far already. I abhor snakeheads and kill every one of them. Going to try for stripers with live bait and artificial on Friday. I'm sure I'll send you another report. You may want to inform the inquirer that they need DC or Maryland tidewater license. DNR police usually patrols the area, which is a good thing, how do I report poachers? I also saw the survey boat this past weekend, great to see DNR at work, love the new fishing report website.

DNR: Hes right where we thought he was.

there is a closed season on striped bass in DC if he plans on creeling them. There is now a PRFC moratorium on all herring and shad in the Potomac. He cannot legally use them for bait. Also, there is not a license reciprocity agreement between MD and DC. He needs a DC license to fish the section of river from Chain Bridge to about mile upstream. From the DC line upstream to Little Falls dam, he needs a MD tidal license or the reciprocal equivalent from VA. Upstream of there he will need a MD or VA freshwater license.

The tidal Potomac, at least up to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge is managed through an agreement (between VA & MD) and administered by the Potomac River Fisheries Commission, the following links should provide some information.

www.prfc.state.va.us/sports/fishing_potomac.htm

The catch a poacher hotline is 800-635-6124.

Han: Great information. Thank you. DC also has a moratorium on Hickory and American shad, but no mention of river herring on their website. I may call them directly and find out. Well, I will have to use gizzard shads for bait. I'll let you know on DC regulations on river herring.

DNR: Han, Im glad you are finding the information useful, I was thinking of posting some of the dialogue on the Anglers Log, Im sure others would find it useful as well would you be opposed to that?

Han:No, I am not opposed. I think it will be helpful for other anglers.

I called Dept. of Environment in DC today. They have a moratorium on American and Hickory Shad, but none on river herring. In fact, there is no creel limit on river herring. Interesting isn't it? So as long as the angler has a DC license and fish within DC limits, you can use them as bait or consumption.

Anyways, I'll let you know how I do this Friday (see above). River level looks good. And thanks, I really enjoyed correspondence with Maryland DNR.
