My friend (mike) and I found these bones on a hook near Martins Airport in Middleriver. We weren't sure what they were from. could we get any help with the id of this fish?
I have been fishing the Anacostia the last few months and have seen snakeheads that have to be at least 3-4ft long and one i would believe to be the biggest i've ever seen, as round as me and without a doubt 5ft long swimming right next to the pier I was on, it didn't even bother with my frog bait i was smacking it with, just swam slowly away.
DNR's Response by Joseph Love, PhD: Its a little tough to say. Its perch-like, possibly a striped bass or largemouth; Id say its definitely a perciform, though. The teeth are a bit conical for a largemouth, but the flesh is gone so who knows? It could even be a snakehead that someone filleted and tossed.
