Savage River Brook Trout

Type: Nontidal
Region: Western
Location: Savage River

Wildlife photographer Jay Fleming and I packed our fly and camera gear and left Annapolis at daybreak for a trip to Western Maryland to meet Matt Sell, John Mullican, Alan Heft, and Josh Hennesy of the MD DNR Inland Fisheries team to catch and tag Savage River brook trout as part of population study. My job was to shoot some video of the process for a DNR online info segment.

I'm rather new at fly fishing, but with perfect weather and clear water temperatures in the upper 30s, I was able to finagle a nice rainbow trout on a green drake fly. The western biologists did much better and caught several brookies to tag and release for the study.

I got some nice footage of the fishing and the tagging process. It should be ready to show on the DNR Fisheries page soon. Follow DNR Fisheries on Facebook to find out when the video is up.
