Susquehanna Hickory Shad

Type: Chesapeake
Region: North Central
Location: Susquehanna River

Over the last week we have seen the hickory shad run slow down as water temperatures are nearing 60 degrees F., more american shad are showing up every day along with large white perch. Alewife herring have done most of their spawning and have been replaced by large schools of blue back herring. The pictures below shows some of the processes involved in the work currently done by the Anadromous Fish Restoration Group with hickory shad on the Susquehanna River.

  • 1. Electroshocking for Hickories on the Susquehanna
  • Hickory Shad spawning in a tank at Cedarville-Manning Hatchery
  • American Shad (top) and Hickory Shad, note the differences in size, body profile, jaw, and scale size
  • A 4+ pound female Smallmouth Bass full of eggs, we encounter fish this size on a regular basis
  • Bald Eagles congregate below Conowingo Dam to feed on the Anadramous fish in the river
