Bluegill Bite is Hot

Type: Nontidal
Region: Central
Location: Farm Ponds

The early spring bluegill bite is on!

I have fished twice recently and managed a nice batch of bluegills at local farmponds, with many of the fish exceeding 9 inches and a few nearing 10. With the warm weather, there was actually an insect hatch of some sort coming off in the late afternoon and gills were feeding on the surface. However, I used 1/64 oz jig heads tipped with a tiny garden worm and suspended them about 2.5 feet below a Thill Mini Shy Bite float to catch these fish on 2 pound test line. Last trip had 30 gills and one small bass.

Water temps are from 44 to 46 F and should remain so as the warmer weather predicted for later in the week arrives. I am predicting an outstanding spring for crappies and gills throughout the mid Atlantic this year.
