Northern Snakehead Entry

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Potomac River

My name is James Berry. I shot 4 snakehead fish with a bow and arrow on March, 16th 2012. These fish were taken near Fort Washington. From what I have seen in the last few years the biggest threat the snakehead posses is not what it eats. This fish is taking over the prime spawning beds for the largemouth bass, and one mature snakehead will control and area where as many as ten bass would spawn. I watched one female snakehead last year chase every bass off a spawning flat that she could see, she policed an area about as big as a tennis court, she made her final chase when she got to within bow range of my boat and went home with me! The largemouth will be in serious trouble if it can't find a way to compete for spawning grounds with the very aggressive snakehead.
