Electrofishing on Wye Mills Lake

Type: Nontidal
Region: Eastern
Location: Wye Mills Lake

We spent a short time electrofishing on Wye Mills Lake to collect a few golden shiners to use as broodstock here at the hatchery. Most of the largemouth bass we encountered had not spawned yet, so in their best interest we did not electrofish very long. There are incredible numbers of panfish available there now. Fishermen interested in catching larger bluegill and redear should give Wye Mills a shot. We saw a few huge bluegills, but many of them were in the 5-7 range. Additionally, there was a tremendous spawn of black crappies there last year. It will be interesting to see how fast they grow up!
