Gill Netting American Shad on the Potomac River

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Central
Location: Potomac River

The American shad spawning run on the Potomac River is at its height. Large numbers of spawning American shad have been collected over the past few weeks. These fish are strip-spawned, and their eggs are taken back to Manning Hatchery for culture. Hatched American shad larvae are being stocked into the Choptank River.

We have caught and released decent numbers of striped bass, blue catfish, gizzard shad, longnose gar, and carp from the nets this year. The Marshall Hall boat ramp provides access to some excellent blue catfishing this time of year.
