Big Catfish and Shad on the Lower Potomac

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Lower Potomac

A friend and I were fishing the lower Potomac Saturday April 7th in the morning from 6:30 -1:00 and brought in around 20-30 cats at least plus a bunch of shad and perch. Sizes ranged from 5lbs to about 40lbs, I THINK. Two big old blues first one was 35" and a fatty, other one was 38.5" but was huge around (didnt get to measure gerth-hindsights 20/20), also pulled in a monster shad. Pics below, enjoy. If anyone knows what type of shad this is and about how much you think these blues weight please chime in.

DNR's response: Brian, I believe you're holding a gizzard shad but not 100% on that, would need another picture, gizzards are resident fish. You're probably close with your weight estimate, might be a tad larger.
