Upper Potomac Chunker Smallies

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Upper Potomac River

Gutpiler Guide Services - Upper Potomac Chunker Smallies! Took my friend Jimmy out of Lander for our first 2012 trip on the upper Potomac. We have been fishing the lower Potomac with the hot largemouth bite until yesterday (See chunker largie photo from 03-17-2012).

Water level was steady-falling at 3 ft at the POR gauge. Water temps averaged 58.5 degrees. Air temps were 50-65 degrees. Skies were mostly Sunny and clear with scattered clouds early. Water clarity clear to 4 ft and swift current. The WIND was blowing steady at 10-15 mph with 20 mph gusts most of the time, making fishing tough and controlling the boat tougher.

First smallie caught at 09:30am. Next one caught at 11:20am. My biggest of the day was about 15" and 2.5lbs. Jimmy's biggest was 18.5" and 4 lbs. All 16 smallies we caught fishing above Brunswick were from using 4" Coffee Tube Jigs while drifting. Most were caught mid-river between 11:45am and 1:30pm, when we had to pack it up to be home in time for Easter dinner!
