Here is a report from the Potomac in the area of Marshall Hall, Saturday and Sunday, April 14th & 15th. We put in Saturday and poked around the main river looking for largemouth. The wind was coming straight up the river and it was 38 degrees. We caught about a dozen decent fish off of some main river rocks on rattle traps. We moved north and to the vicinity of Pohick and found a school of stripers, sitting well off of the bank in 7-8 feet of water. We caught about 20 with the largest around 22 inches and 5lbs. The Comerants, Gulls, and Ospreys were all involved as they zeroed us in on an area loaded with bait.
Sunday, we fished the main river a little further north and caught about 20 very nice largemouth, missed several stripers at boat side. Right at high tide I threw my rattle trap onto the bank and when it got into 3 feet of water, wham, I set the hook but was snagged. I kept tension on the line and soon realized it was moving. After about 30 seconds of pulling straight away it came off. 2 casts later, same deal. This time I managed to land the fish. 39 inch carp with the rattle trap square in between his bugle lips. Weighed 38 lbs on boga grip. That fish fought like a champ and was released unharmed. Water temps were 53 degrees on Saturday morning and by Sunday afternoon it had risen to 69-70. I see no signs of fish spawning yet.
Tight lines!
