Reporting from the banks of Owens Creek near Thurmont with a tribe of Level-five anglers as part of the 70th annual outing of the Brotherhood of the Junglecock.
Since 1940, mentors have brought their boys to these trout streams for a jam-packed weekend of indoctrination into the art and responsibilities of being an angler---entomology, rod building, fly-tying, conservation, species identification, casting, and, of course plenty of fishing. The two casting ponds and select streams have been stocked with about 8000 fish to entertain about 300 young anglers.
One youngster will be selected to continue on to the Maryland Fishing Challenge grand finale at Sandy Point State Park on September 11 with a chance to win a great prize. He will also receive a free fishing trip provided by one of the 26 fishing organizations that make up the Maryland support council of the year-long Maryland Fishing Challenge.
This may be the best thing any dad and boy could do on a magnificent spring Saturday.
