The Annual John Carroll Kids Fishing Day was held on Saturday, May 5, at John Carroll School in Bel Air. Saturday was the perfect day for fishing, a bit overcast and not too hot. Most of the 45 kids present caught fish including rainbow trout (stocked by MD DNR Fisheries Service), bluegill, and an occasional golden shiner. Rachel Ehm was caught by surprise when a 3 lb 12 oz largemouth bass grabbed ahold of the bluegill she was reeling in. This made for an exciting fish tale and landed her a 1st place trophy for the largest fish. The 2nd place winner was Miles Peizynski with a 1 lb 7 oz rainbow trout and 3rd place was Neal Villanueva with a 1lb 4 oz rainbow trout.
I was there to represent DNR-Fisheries in support of the Youth Component of the Maryland Fishing Challenge featuring Diamond Jim. Cole Whisler was the lucky youth angler randomly selected to move on to the finale on September 8, 2012. The finale is held in conjunction with the Maryland Seafood Festival at Sandy Point Park. Cole will be in a special drawing for youth for one of the many fishing trips donated by our partners.
