Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: Millersville
This morning I found this crayfish taking a walk on the sidewalk in front of my house. I live in Millersville in a neighborhood with no water nearby that I know of. Thought it was interesting... It played dead when I got close to it to take a picture.
DNR Response: It is a red swamp crawfish (Procambarus clarkii). It is not native to Maryland. It was originally introduced in the state for the purposes of aquaculture in the early 1980s. It was introduced and cultured in outdoor ponds, and quickly spread into nearby waterways. It is also a common bait species. Some of the established populations we find in Maryland are likely the result of its use as bait by anglers. It is now found in many watersheds in Maryland's Coastal Plain. It seems to be a species that likes to take walks on land, especially after recent rains.
