St. Mary's Lake Snakehead

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Spillway of St Mary's Lake

I was fishing in the spillway up at St. Marys Lake on Sunday, June 24th the day before my birthday and was gifted a 28 inch 14 inch girth monster 10 lb snakehead. I was using my ultra-light setup fishing for bluegill and was about ready to leave when I threw out a white bomber and this beast hit it and I didnt know what to think. It took me over 5 mins to land it and I knew right away what it was, fried it up and it was some of the best fish I have ever had the pleasure of eating.

DNR Response: According to Mary Groves (Southern Region Manager), snakeheads are somewhat common in the spillway of St. Marys Lake. Because it is nearly impossible for snakeheads to get into the lake on its own, she urges people to be cautious when transporting snakehead. Please make sure the fish is dead when transporting it. Also, please do not release the species into St. Marys Lake.
