Canoe Fishing in Ocean City

Type: Ocean
Region: Eastern
Location: Ocean City

I wanted to know if people can saftley canoe and fish for flounder in Ocean City behind Assateague Island? I am heading up next weekend and was hoping to enjoyably drift for flounder over a few hours in my canoe. Is there anywhere in the area from which I can launch?

DNR Response:This is the busiest time of year for boat traffic so safety is a huge consideration. Wear a pfd! That being said there were several kayaks out fishing today around the route 50 bridge.

There is a boat ramp in the commercial harbor (Golf Course Rd) in West Ocean City that would be the best access to good flounder fishing. It is also in a no wake zone north to the 50 bridge. The fishing is good for flounder right at the entrance to the commercial harbor. There is a lot of current in this area so I would try and fish around the high tide and two hours after the charted high tide for the best fishing and least tide.

You can also put in around the west end of the bridge to Assateague. There is a boat launch there. I am not as familiar with the quality of fishing in that area although there will be considerably less boat traffic.
