How to Properly Kill a Snakehead

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Mattawoman Creek

This snakehead was caught in Mattawoman Creek by USFWS when they were out killing snakehead. The fish had been hooked and then it appears that the angler tried to decapitate it. Its tough to sever the spine of some of these fish, particularly the bigger ones. If anglers want to kill the fish, they can use a blunt object to knock out the fish before severing its spinal cord, or the angler can simply remove one or two gill arches from the fish using needle nose pliers. For more information on this, check out this DNR Snakehead Video.
