Are there Chain Pickerel in Piscataway Creek?

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Piscataway Creek

I caught this northern snakehead on a top water frog over a weed bed around 6:15am 26 July 2012. This is my 9th Snakehead this season taken by rod & reel, but my first taken from Piscataway. One more for the freezer!!!

Question for DNR or other fishermen: Are there Pickerel in Piscataway and Mattawoman? I have been fishing these two places regularly since the beginning of June and have not caught one yet. I have caught largemouth bass, yellow perch, white perch, crappie, catfish, bluegills/sunfish, longnose gar and northern snakeheads, but not one chain pickerel! Have the snakeheads chased them off, or have they just avoided my lures? Just wondering.

DNR Response from Mary Groves (Southern Region Manager): There are pickerel in some of the tributaries of the Potomac, but we see many more in the Patuxent. As the angler points out, there are many more top predators that share the grassbeds in the Potomac. We find them more in the farthest reaches of each tributary but if someone asked where to go for pickerel, the Potomac wouldnt be on my list. Id suggest St. Marys Lake or the Patuxent.
