Bumpy Oak Pond Snakeheads

Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: Bumpy Oak Road Pond

I was fishing on Aug. 14 at Bumpy Oak Road Pond and caught and killed 8 snakeheads (I cut all the gill arches from the fish). Gave one away to a guy who didn't have luck and was fishing for them for the first time and I kept 7 to eat (they are really good eating). I caught 4 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon. The biggest one was a good 22" and 6 lbs.

Is it true the reason snakeheads are in the pond is because when the Mattawoman Creek floods they get in there somehow?

DNR Response:Thanks for your fishing report on catching and killing those snakeheads from Bumpy Oak Pond! Youre exactly right that snakehead likely got in there when the river and the pond mix water during large rain events. We have the same problem in Salisbury where snakeheads can get into the city park pond from the upper Wicomico during large rain events. Thanks again for removing those fish from the waterway and helping to control the population in the Potomac.
