I had not fished my favorite areas on the upper potomac in two months or so, but I was glad I returned the morning of Sunday June 13th. I arrived about the time of sunrise and began fishing a firetiger bomber long-a in a calm shady area. On my fifth cast or so, I felt a slight tick and saw a large swirl on the water's surface near my line. I threw the bomber back along the same path and something big slammed my lure about 10 feet from shore. After a short but strong fight I was lucky to land, measure, photo, and release a beautiful 27 inch walleye.
After this one I could have called it a day, but i hoped more may be around. I worked the area thoroughly with the bomber, then tried several jigs with soft plastics and a smaller hard minnow bait.
The soft plastics produced several smallmouth from 6-10 inches, and couple short strikes that didn't hook-up. The smaller xps minnow produced one more walleye at 19 inches, a 11-12 inch smallie, and a similar sized channel cat. Thanks to DNR for helping to keep this fishery in top shape, and for providing the Angler's Log for everyone to enjoy.
