Put the kayak in the water around 3:00 P.M. During the afternoon I only managed to catch a few short largemouth bass and some sunfish on a crank bait and a 4-inch jig worm Then the sun dipped behind the tree line and the dinner bell was rung!
Hooked three bass in the 17 to 18 inch range. They were hitting a texas rigged 10-inch Culprit plastic worm in "voodoo" color. Voodoo is a tan & green worm with some glitter sprinkled in although I think color really takes a back-seat to size and action. I think they would have nailed just about any natural color. I was fishing in 10-15 feet of water in areas where I know there are some really big submerged logs. The bass were intercepting the worm about 5 to 6 feet down on the initial drop right after the cast. I would cast out and count the worm down and feel that tell-tale "bump" after a 5 count. The bass were obviously up and hunting during that twilight period but I couldn't get them to hit a crank bait run through those areas at that same depth. They just seemed to prefer that worm on a straight drop and retrieving the worm back to the kayak along the bottom was not enticing strikes either.
It's getting to that time of year where the best action seems to be very early and very late in the day.
As some other posters have mentioned recently I too am a daily reader of the Angler Log and read and enjoy every report. With the disappearance of fishing reports from newspapers this is a great resource you have provided for the avid angler. Thank you!
