Fishing and Crabbing South of the Flats

Type: Tidal
Region: North Eastern
Location: Elk River

We took my dads boat out for some cruising and fishing up the Elk River on Saturday, Sept 1st. We got a late start, but were still able to get into some white perch and spot about 2 miles up the river in a large cove. We dropped a couple crab traps at the mouth of the Elk, just off Turkey Point, and were able to pick up one big jimmy.

On Labor Day, we braved the potentially bad weather, and tried some more intensive crabbing off Turkey Point. Crabbing was still slow, with a couple keepers and a lot of throw backs. However, in between pulls, we fished a few spots off the point as well. The first spot rewarded us with some small croaker and spot. My cousin Jake caught a 19 channel Cat. All fish were caught on either cut baits, Fishbite Bloodworms and/or squid. Crabs were caught with chicken necks.
