Took my son and niece to Dam Number Four Sunday on the Upper Potomac. I thought we would primarily target Sunfish to make sure the kids caught a few fish, but the young Smallmouth had other ideas. We were fishing micro jigs (1/32nd oz. or Trout Magnets) cast into the current then allowed to settle into eddies along the bank and were getting slammed by 6 to 8 inch Smallmouth on nearly every other cast. Not sure if these fish are from the 08 or 07 year class but they seem to be every where including feeding areas I normally find dominated by Redbreasted Sunfish, or Rock Bass. Any one looking to introduce a youngster to Bass fishing should hit the Upper Potomac because it is currently loaded with aggressive young Smallmouth. We still managed to find a few Redbreasts and Rock Bass but in far fewer numbers then the Smallmouth instead of the other way around.
