A message from the staff at Backwater Angler...
The Gunpowder river is flowing at 52 CFs, is 54 (F), and gin clear. We've been fishing blue winged olives and tricos most mornings along the river. July terrestrial fishing is heating up. We have new ants, beetles, grasshoppers and plenty of trico patterns on the front counter. Three weight rods from St. Croix, Scott and Sage are fun to use and afford a good measure of stealth and touch-especially when fishing 7x. Lightweight fanny packs and wading pants make summer fishing more comfortable-especially in light of our seemingly endless 95+ F days...
Didymo wash stations are present at most of the Catch and Release access points along the river. It's easy enough to make up a salt water wash similiar to what is used at the stations along the river at home. Just use one cup of salt per gallon of water-it's best to mix up three to four gallons in a 5 gallon bucket. For the most effective treatment, drying time between uses is a very important factor that should not be overlooked even if one is cleaning and disinfecting rubber soled shoes! --Shoes should be bone dry before the next use. Please use the wash stations before you leave the river by standing in the basin for 60 seconds. Using the brush to clean any lose bits off your waders and shoes. Rinse your waders and shoes off at home with freshwater, discharging the rinse water onto grass-not the driveway or a storm drain-and dry your gear fully in sunlight to help contain Didymo!
