Brian Roberts won the 37th annual White Marlin Open last week in Ocean City, MD. The 97.5-pound white marlin he landed aboard the Shelly II on Tuesday remained the largest white marlin captured for the rest of the week. This is the second largest white marlin captured in WMO tournament history, barely shy of the 99-pound white marlin captured by Steve Bass in 1980. Tommy Fowler of the Sea Toy also maintained 2nd place with his noteworthy 92-pound white marlin captured on Tuesday.
While the white marlin division dominated much of the competition at the tournament, the grander brought to the scales on Tuesday by James Kontos of Let it Ride also drew much attention. This 1010.5-pound blue marlin is the second largest blue marlin landed in the history of the WMO, second only to last years 1062-pounder landed by Bob Farris. This years 2nd place blue marlin was a 790-pounder brought in by Trey Little aboard the Scandalous on the first day of the tournament. In many years, this blue marlin would have been large enough to win the blue marlin division.
The last day of the tournament was eventful for the tuna division. Angler Trey Little slid into 1st place with his 77.5 pound tuna, just ahead of Travis Boones (Thats Right) 76.5-pounder that had been holding the 1st place spot since Monday. Caitlin Schiffer of the Lucky Duck II took 3rd place on Friday with a 73.5-pounder. Also on Friday, angler Zachary Gelacek on the Banshee 2 brought a 47.5-pound wahoo to the scales, the only wahoo to qualify this year in the wahoo division. In the dolphin division, 1st place went to Cory Bubb of Top Gun who brought in a 53.5-pounder on Monday. Second and third place were 51.5-pounds (Timothy Warner, White Lightening) and 43-pounds (Rob Benentt, Queen Anne).
