Could it Be a Large Blue?

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Eastern
Location: Cambridge, MD

While fishing in Cambridge, MD over the weekend I came across an incident that I am still scratching my head and screaming expletives in my head. I had some cut bait and caught a young blue, probably around 5 inches. Then I got a big hit and hooked it. I had it very close to the boat before he took my hook, it bit through the line. Ill admit I wasnt using the strongest line because I hadnt anticipated catching something that large but I saw the shadow and he was a big boy! I was really far in the bay and wasnt sure if blues come in that far. Is it plausible that it was in fact a Bluefish?

DNR Response: Hello Charles, many older fishermen will remember the days when large Bluefish up to 10lbs or more were common in this portion of the bay. They seem to have left us in the late 80s but fishermen do catch them now and then at this time of the year all the way up past the Bay Bridge.
