What is this prehistoric looking creature?

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Mid Bay
Location: North Beach

I was wondering if you could help me identify the attached prehistoric creature! I was casting a silver spoon in shallow water near North Beach for rockfish/Bluefish and hooked this strange looking fish. The only thing I could think it could be is something from the gar family. Thanks for your help guys!

DNR Response: That is an Atlantic Needle Fish. They are common in the Chesapeake and coastal bays during the summer months. They can grow to be almost 2 long. They should not be confused with another member of the Needle Fish family, the Hound Fish which can grow to be 5 long and can be seen infrequently in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The Hound Fish has a much shorter beak.
