Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge

Type: Nontidal
Region: Northern
Location: Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge

I went fishing this past Friday, August 27th, and tried an area I've never been before. Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge. Easy to get to and a beautiful place. It only took me an hour and 50 minutes from Havre de Grace, MD. The sunrise was bright orange, pink, and purple. The wind picked up a little so the water was a little choppy but calmed back down after about an hour. It turned out to be a great day! Using light tackle, I caught a mixed bag of White Perch (kept 5 for the grill), 2 Stripers (both released), and had some of my plastics bitten in half by some small blues. Tons of bait. At one point my kayak and I were completely surrounded by a bait ball. Crabs were swimming up to the kayak and I was wishing I had a dip net and a bucket. Eagles were swooping down and picking off fish, families were in boats looking for crabs, and Blue Herons were stalking. The tide was on the way out and made the paddle back under the little bridge on Route 445 a little tough. Great place to fish and sight see. Planning on returning when the water cools down a little more and try out my new fly rod.

Picture of the largest striper I caught this day. Just a little over 11 inches.
