I set out to spend most of the day on the flats in the yak this past Friday early morning from Tyding's Park. The fog was heavy, leaving droplets of dew on my glasses making it hard to see. I paddled out around the island at the marina and noticed about 20 birds diving out of the sky and plunging into the water. I immediately headed towards them while dragging a small jig with a 1" chartreuse shad on it. Felt a light tug on the line and it was a small white perch.
I no sooner threw the lure back in and started paddling again and then bam...another hit. It was the yellow perch pictured below. By the time I got to where the birds were feeding, they had scattered. I saw a lot of carp fining. I also saw a lot of large crabs in the grass beds. A lot of people are catching crabs on the flats now. A friend of mine went out around Battery Island and reported that they were catching some small stripers.
I will say, fishing in the fog out of a yak was a new experience.
