As our spring slowly progresses, many species are becoming active in small public and private lakes throughout central Maryland. We have switched from a rattlebait to a soft plastic bite on shallow largemouths that are in various stages of the spawn and pre-spawn, with 4 inch stickworms getting the nod most days. In between, panfish like bluegills, crappies, colorful redear sunfish and hybrid sunfish can keep you busy with small jigs below a bobber.
One thingdon't overlook the effectiveness of trolling live shiners in the smaller lakes. While persuing freshwater stripers I recently caught and released this 24 inch trophy largemouth at Piney Run. Good luck!
