I always start my fishing season with a trip up to Deer Creek for Hickory Shad. So when I had a opening in my schedule, I grabbed my waders, a fly rod and some shad flies and headed up to Susquehanna State Park for a couple of hours of fishing after work. Not only was the fishing spectacular, but so was the scenery! The riversides were carpeted in wildflowers (bluebells, trillium, may apple, etc), blue herons were perched on lots of the mid-creek rocks and the osprey dive-bombed unsuspecting fish. Even the spring peepers were singing.
I caught shad in the seams next to the riffles and also at the heads and tails of the pools. The standard red/yellow shad fly on a sink-tip line fished down and across the current resulted in numerous fish. The shad were all silvery and bright and most of them would leap at least once when hooked.
When I finally finished fishing well after dark I drove up Stafford Road past the bald eagles nest towards Conowingo Dam and startled a black bear crossing the road! What a great start to fishing season!
