Striped bass action continues to improve as the temperature drops. Fall is prime time for light tackle anglers who enjoy hunting up the action, running and gunning, and getting jiggy over likely hard bottom contours where big fish trap forage fish between a rising bottom and the waters surface.
Weve been fortunate to fish with or near light tackle fanatic Shawn Kimbro this week. His intuition backed up by a Lowrance Hi-Def sonar combined with his Tennessee hoochie-coo jigging technique (my term) ups the odds for bringing remarkably big sea-run fish to hand.
The latest trip included local boat builder Colin Crozier, Baltimore Sun outdoor writer Candy Thomson, me, and a cloud of birds.
In the span of a couple of twilight hours, we managed to fool fish over 30 inches using simple leadheads with white or yellow plastic tails.
Kimbros advicePass up the little terns and gulls and go where the big birds are sitting.
