Sugarloaf View (SLV) Girl Scout Fishing Badge Day at Greenbrier State Park
Type: Nontidal
Region: Central
Location: Greenbrier State Park
The SLV Cadette Troop 81216 hosted their 1st Fishing Badge Day. The troop provided instruction in safe casting, baiting hooks, rod & tackle, knot tying, fish identification & habitat, angler laws & ethics, and of course fishing. The Girl Scouts (and Brownies) were required to participate in the learning stations prior to fishing. Each station provided a fun but informative 10 minute activity and was manned by the SLV Cadettes (6th graders). I was present to promote the Maryland Youth Fishing Club and was impressed with the knowledge and confidence the station leaders demonstrated. Maryland Natural Resources Police reserve officers were on hand to do a water safety demonstration, and a local Fly-Fishing group was giving the girls a fly-fishing lesson. Although a fast moving storm rolled in prior to the last rotation, they were able to resume and complete all stations for the 75 girls to receive their fishing badge. Below are the photos highlighting the learning stations.
