My buddy and I took advantage of the beautiful weather this past Friday and headed out to Western MD for some early season trout fishing. We were hoping to float & fish the North Branch Potomac from Westernport to Black Oak, but the river was too high and off color for our liking, so we headed to the Casselman.
The Casselman was more crowded than I expected, but the river was at a perfect level. I was fly fishing and my buddy had a medium light spinning rod. I started with a woolly bugger and he tied on a rapala. Niether of us got any hits with these set-ups. I think the had been seeing these lures every day for a week. So, I went with a tandem nymph rig, dead drifting a san juan worm and a woolly bugger.
The key was targeting the deepest channels and dredging the bottom. The takes were very subtle, so keeping a tighter line helped. I landed 15 trout, all rainbows, and lost about 5. The fished ranged from 10" to 14". It was a great day to be out.
