Savage River Trout

I had a great day and the Savage River all to myself as I put on my boots and grabbed my fly rod last Friday afternoon. I fished about a 1/2 mile of river below the Ph.D. hole. The river was a perfect level and since I didn't see any bugs in the air I decided to swing some streamers. Using a brown and grey muddler with some red flash proved productive. I landed a half dozen browns, 3 brookies and one rainbow. By late afternoon some bugs were coming up and I decided to try an mayfly pattern - very small. I had a big fish swirl my fly on the far bank on the second cast and landed one small brown on the dry. I also saw this interesting snake sunning on a rock in mid-river that I have not been able to identify. Any ideas?
