Thank God someone finally turned off the wind generator and allowed the light tackle fleet to venture out. Beginning on Veterans Day, we returned to the places that have been treating us so well all yearEastern Bay, Thomas Point, Poplar Island, and the main stem of the bay. There we found some of the anglers weve gotten to know over the summer including Brian Helper, an indefatigable saltwater fly-rodder in his sturdy Montauk Whaler with his black Labrador retriever spotting the swirling seagulls and terns.
Friday evening delivered a lonely drift along the Eastern Shore near Tilghman Island and a marvelous 40-inch fish fooled by a Crab-Colored Clouser on a nine-weight rod in about three feet of clear watermy best of the year.
On Saturday, renowned boat builder Colin Crozier was out in his classic Simmons Seaskiff running all the hot spots from Kent Narrows to Sharps Island. We met up on the wharf at Knapps Narrows for some delicious oyster stew and refreshing malt beverages.
On Sunday, I designed a solution to the fishwife/fishchild abandonment problem by coaxing my wife and daughter out for a picnic supper and some casting as the sun set over Chesapeake Beach.
It worked!
