Green Sunfish

Type: Nontidal
Region:
Location:

Can anyone in the DNR office please identify this fish caught in freshwater. 2 were caught and released on 2 different days this past weekend.

DNR Response: We are pretty sure it is a green sunfish. This one is very dark colored and he appears to be living up to his reputation of being very aggressive, judging by the size of the rubber worm in his mouth. The hatchery program cross breeds green sunfish with bluegills for their youth fishing programs so that the hybrid bluegills are easy to catch by kids.
