Big Bait Balls Near Plum Pt Reef

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Mid Bay
Location: Plum Pt Reef and Stone Rock

SE Corner Plum Pt Reef and Stone Rock 9-21-14

We found multiple big menhaden schools breaking just off the SE side and corner of the Plum Pt reef site while trolling in areas we circled per screenshot off my smartphone Navionics app. Bluefish were slashing through the schools. I threw plugs and Hopkins into the schools as we went by with no results other than snagging a menhaden (used for bait later). We worked the area off the SE corner and landed and released 4 rockfish from 14 to 16-1/2" including a doubler on an umbrella rig with small white bucktails. The plastic trailers were sacrificial with blues in the area. Also snagged a plastic icebag half full of water someone had inappropriately discarded. Mid-afternoon we anchored in 40' at Stone Rock and tried some frozen cut spot and artificials since it was too late in our trip to try for spot. A couple of bites, no hookups. A charterboat alongside with live spot was hauling in small blues and got a couple of just keeper rockfish. We also saw some big bait balls on the scope just west of the edge.
