Yellow Perch report from Sunday 02/06/11

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Northern
Location: Susquehanna River

Launched out of Owens Landing Marina in Perryville with my friends Joe, Gerald and Gary in search of big yellow perch. It was a beautiful sunny day in the low 40s. Lots of anglers were taking advantage of the weather. I counted nearly 50 boats spread out around the mouth of the Susquehanna River. We caught fish at every stop, although some of the areas were holding bigger perch than others. At about 1 pm, I hooked into my personal best yellow perch, a 14 1/8 incher on a little blue Kalin's grub with an orange tail. We were fishing various depths but the biggest perch came out of 20 to 25' of water. After a few quick pictures I released her back in the river in spite of strong objections from my fishing buddies. Still, I felt a great sense of satisfaction knowing someone else may have a chance to catch that big perch. Besides, we took home plenty of perch for the table with nothing measuring under 10 inches. It was a lotta fun just being outside and fishing in the middle of winter. We all agreed this Upper Bay yellow perch fishery is world class. Many thanks to the DNR for changing the regs to help make this fantastic fishery possible.
