For the past couple of years, I have been hearing people speak highly about an annual event called 'Tiefest' that is held in February by Maryland Coastal Conservation Association. I have never attended, but made it a priority to do so this year. The event was Saturday, February 12th at the Kent Island Yacht Club. I was pleasantly surprised when my oldest daughter asked to go with me. She started fly-fishing and fly-tying last year, and apparently has a continued interest as the alternatve was to stay home and watch TV or play on the computer.
In summary, the event was well attended and everyone, including us, seemed to be having a great time. Special thanks to Tony Friedrich with MD CCA who took the time to introduce my daughter and I to some well known fly tyers. And, thanks also to Steve Silverio and Blaine Chocklett who gave my daughter two incredible flys. My daugher plans to draw one of these flies for an art project at school. Wouldn't it be great to get 'fly-tying' into the middle and high schools as part of the art curriculum? I am sure the kids would be interested, and this would present an opportunity to introduce kids into fishing and environmental conservation.
This morning, my daughter asked me to get our fly-tying equipment out to tie some flies! See attached photo. The other attachment is a photo of the fly that Steve Silverio gave her (Steve is in the background) for which my daughter will draw a replicate of for her art class.
While this is not the typcial Angler's Log content, it is the closest to fishing that I have been over the past month. With the warming weather partern over the coming week, I hope so an increase in Angler Log entries from Maryland's sportsfishermen. The yellow perch bite is hot, and our staff have begun stocking trout. As Allan Eilis from the Outdoor Radio Show (Saturday, 5-7 a.m. on station 680 am) would say, "Get Out and Stay Out".
