It was a cold morning in Frederick, MD on Saturday , February 12th. I finished all my "Honey Do's" and had a really bad itch to get back into the streams and do some Pre-Season trout fishing. I drove two and a half hours West on 68 and was on a mission to land some good fish. I decided to go to the North Potomac in Barnum, WV. Some people think I'm crasy for driving that far just to go Trout fishing. But, for me.. its all about forgetting about the busy work and get away into the Mountains of Garret County.
As I was exiting of of 68 and heading south towards Westernport, I was caught in the middle of some heavey snow squalls. I didnt let that shy me away from arriving at Barnum. I finally arrived at the beautiful snow covered scene of the North Potomac river.
My heart was racing to make that first cast of the year! I was hoping to land a lunker in a just a few minutes...... Well, it turned into about 45 minutes of not even a nibble. I was using a few fly spinners and trout Magnets. I finally got a few hits and landed a beautiful rainbow. She was only about 7 inches long but she was a great way to kick off another trout season.
I enjoyed my day and was satisfied with just 1 fish. I drove a total of 4 hours for 1 fish. Sounds crazy but I had fun.
I guess things will pick up once they start stocking. If you get a chance for some preseason fishing... It's cold but FUN! Good Luck!!
