Ice Fishing the Savage Reservoir

For a change of scenery this ice fishing season, myself along with fisheries biologist�s Alan Klotz and Matt Sell decided to head to the Savage Reservoir to see what we could bring up from the depths. We were greeted with around 14 inches of good ice with a few inches of snow cover on top that came in handy as we were running from one tip-up to another. The fish didn�t need too much persuasion to bite, after setting out my first tip-up for the day the flag popped before I could even walk away to set the second and this fast action continued for most of the trip. Various jigs with maggots and tip-ups with a fathead were both producers throughout the day brining plenty of perch and a trout to the ice. The savage is not necessarily known for large jumbo perch like the ones of near by Deep Creek Lake; but this is made up for with a lot of action, large numbers of fish, and still being able to catch sizable fish to keep for the dinner table. For anyone looking to get into the sport of ice fishing, or someone like myself that was wanting a change, I highly recommend giving the Savage Reservoir a try.
