Yellow Perch Appreciation Day in North East

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Eastern
Location: North East

On March 5th, my family participated in the 2nd Annual Yellow Perch Appreciation Day in North East. This event is put on by the Maryland Coastal Conservation Association (MD CCA) to celebrate the recovery of yellow perch and focus on taking kids and families fishing. There were well over 100 people at the event, and everyone seemed to catch some fish. The event ended with awards being given for the largest yellow perch a 21.8 oz whopper! There were several yellow perch taken between 13 and 14 inches, as well as some nice largemouth bass (released) and black crappie. Congratulations to MD CCA for another successful youth fishing event.

North East Town Park is a free fishing area that has good shoreline access for kids and families, and also a nearby boat ramp. Elk Neck State Park is located a few miles away and includes a campground that includes full hookup sites for campers and many sites for tents. Take a day or overnight trip to go fishing with your family and/or friends this spring. I am confident the trip will be something your kids will reflect upon as they grow up.
