After a long cold winter, I was finally able to make it out on March 4th to Olney Manor for my first fishing excursion of the season in hopes that there might be a couple lively bass. I arrived around 4:30 p.m. on Friday and it was a little windy, hovering around 10-15 mph, and overcast skies. The air temperature was in the upper 40's and the water temp was cold. I fished for about an hour and half throwing everything from lipless crankbaits to trick worms, and slowly moving around the more productive parts of the pond. As the sun began to set and my hands began freeze, I decided to send out my last few casts before I left. I threw out a white plastic swim shad and worked it slowly back to shore from the middle of the pond when this chunky bass decided to slam it only a few feet from the shore. I didn't have a scale on me, but I estimated it to be around six pounds. After that, I decided to go out on top and call it a day.
The next morning at around 9:00 a.m., my buddy Danny and I headed down to the Potomac River near the Chain Bridge, right where Montgomery County and D.C. meet. It was a bit warmer that morning, probably in the 50's with overcast skies and a little bit of drizzle. We fished mainly with plastic grubs and tube baits at a few different locations, and eventually hopped out on some rocks so we could cast out a little further into the river. After about an hour and half, Danny hooked into a nice walleye that jumped out of the water and gave a nice fight. He caught it on a tube bait with a weighted tube bait hook, and it probably weighed a solid three pounds, if not more. That was Danny's first walleye and he was pretty excited to nab one.
Two really nice fish at two different locations, you can't ask for much more.
