Many thanks goes out to the Youghiogheny River Watershed Associated for hosting a trash clean-up along the Youghiogheny River Catch and Return Trout Fishing Area in observance of Earth Day. Several volunteer organizations joined the effort including members from the Snowy Creek 4-H Club, Northern Garrett High Schools Envirothon Club, Garrett Colleges Wildlife Club, Frostburg State Universitys Geography Club, Youghiogheny Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Maryland DNR Fisheries Service, and local citizens.
Earth Day, April 22, was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues, and is now a globally celebrated holiday that is sometimes extended to Earth Week, a full seven days of events focused on green awareness. By raising public awareness of air and water pollution, Earth Day founder Sen. Gaylord Nelson hoped to bring environmental causes into the national spotlight. The volunteers separated the aluminum cans for recycling, with the proceeds donated to the Timothy Umbel Memorial Scholarship at Northern Garrett High School. Tim attended Northern Garrett High School, and he was known for his love of the outdoors.
