Im on the road once again today visiting Fishing Challenge Award Centers; each day holds new adventures as I travel through Maryland. The geography today is very different from the eastern shore where I live. The mountains and fast flowing streams that cascade through rocky draws and valleys are a wonderful sight to a flatlander like me. I came upon this familiar roadside sign that often marks a historic spot; this one marked the first fish hatchery in Maryland in 1917. Weve come a long way since then for sure. Somehow it seemed appropriate that I would meet biologists from the western region, a hatchery truck full of trout and a group of dedicated volunteers along the way. Ken Booth from the Albert Powell Hatchery pulled up with a load of trout and fisheries biologists Josh Henesy, Mark Toms and John Mullican passed buckets full of trout to waiting volunteers who walked them to locations streamside in an effort to spread the fish out. These trout were being stocked in a put and take area and will certainly provide plenty of fun for fishermen.
