Broadford Lake Panfishing

Type: Nontidal
Region: Western
Location: Broadford Lake

The bluegill and black crappie bite is on at Broadford Lake in Garrett County! I used a 9 foot, 4 weight fly rod with an elk-hair caddis as an indicator fly and a bead-head caddis larva as the dropper - and had great fishing. The crappies are in very shallow water under overhanging bank vegetation, and you had to swim the dropper fly to get a strike. Although my biggest crappie a 12 incher did take the dry fly. The bluegills are found in a bit deeper water, about 6 foot depths, and took both the dropper and the dry. Kept enough for a long-overdue fish fry and released the rest. Broadford Lake is a great place to take kids fishing, and is managed by the town of Oakland.
