The Running of the Bulls

Type: Nontidal
Region: Central
Location: Local Pond

Giant, bull male bluegills are invading the shallows of many Maryland lakes and ponds for an early spawn this year. I saw actively bedding fish on May 4th...about three weeks ahead of schedule for normal spawning activity in central Maryland. As crappies transition to a post-spawn stage we are now targeting primo-sized gills with 1/80th oz jigs tipped with a variety of baits.

Please be sure to release the largest males to protect nest guarding and for continued quality panfishing in your favorite lakes and ponds. We will be conducting two panfishing seminars at Bass Pro Shops at Arrundel Mills Mall on Saturday May 23, 2015 at 11 am and 3 pm. Feel free to join my son Matt and I as we talk big bluegills and how to catch them and the need for catch and release ethics on these trophy specimens.
