My brother in law and I took a trip to Smithville Lake on Sunday, September 20, 2015. We arrived and launched our small (10) boat powered by electric motor and were fishing by 7:45 AM. We were fishing a small (1/16 1/32 ounce) jig under a foam bobber. One rod each was tipped with a minnow and one rod each was tipped with a gulp alive 2 chartreuse artificial minnow. The artificial bait outperformed the live by about a 3-1 ratio. We had a fantastic day boating 69 Crappies, 2 Bluegills, 2 Chain Pickerel, a small Largemouth Bass and a Catfish. Many of the Crappies were over a foot long! The attached picture is of my brother in law, John Jacob (of Pasadena, Maryland) with one of the many slab Crappies caught that day.
