What are these fish doing?

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Downs Park at Wharf creek off of Bodkin Creek

Today we saw hundreds of fish that were at the surface of shallow water. They were all the same size and appeared to be catfish. Do you have any idea what these fish were doing?

DNR Response: They look like a school of juvenile brown bullhead catfish. It is not uncommon to see small brown bullhead catfish clustered together in a tight swarm when they are only a couple of inches long in the spring. This looks like a successful hatch of bullheads that are now about 6" long that need to spread out into more suitable habitat. I suspect a rain event which will cause higher water and flows will cause them to be swept downstream into deeper waters.
